Photos from the Say What? Gallery

My apartment walls are a beige-y pink. It’s kinda pretty and soothing, as long as you don’t try to use them as a background for photographing art. It’s a terrible color for that. In my next apartment, I may just paint one wall white, so I always have a solid backdrop. It’s normal to have a bright white accent wall, right? Along with overhead track lighting?

Until then, I’ll have to keep you all guessing at what my artwork really looks like until it reaches the gallery.

…And here it is, no more sneak peaks, or photos of my work on beige walls. Here they are in all their glory at the Say What? Contemporary Gallery in Tannersville, NY. The show will be up until March 25th, 2013. All pieces are made from hand-me-down jeans and thread.

It’s hard to capture all the details of these works, so please go and see them in person if you can. I included as much of the character of the old denim as possible, including stains, fraying, whisker lines and holes. See more close ups after the jump.

There’s a purple-blue ink stain on the right side of this piece.

Holey Spaces

Holey Spaces

This was one of my favorite pairs of jeans, layered over several other pairs of jeans, all with gaping holes in their knees.

Vortex

Vortex

The shape of the denim flow in Vortex was inspired by two things, a painting of a rooster that hangs in my grandmother’s dining room, and the opening credits of Doctor Who.

The center of the flower was created from the old copper thread that I collected from the jeans as I ripped them apart.
